Programs & Classes
The Sandy Point Sailing Association offers a complete sailing instructional program for sailors of all ages and levels. Sandy Point follows a system of instruction that is recognized by the United States Sailing Association to accelerate a student’s learning by using a building-block approach and emphasizes active on-the-water participation by the student. As new skills are introduced, previously learned skills are reviewed and consolidated.
Most sailors will acquire entry-level skills quite rapidly. However, mastering them is an experience that will be rewarding, mentally stimulating, and pleasurable for a lifetime. As students learn to sail, they find that sailing is more rewarding than simply being pushed and pulled by the wind. For most people, sailing is meeting new friends, enjoying nature’s beauty, and sharing a unique fellowship with all boaters.

 Learn to Sail

Sandy Point’s Learn to Sail program places emphasis on getting students on the water quickly and learning sailing skills by doing making the learning experience more exciting and immediately satisfying. The program is conducted under the leadership of instructors with US Sailing Level I certifications and current Fist Aid and CPR training who encourage self-confidence in young sailors and emphasize safety and respect for the sea.
Students only need to be a minimum of 8yrs old and have basic swimming skills to start a pastime that will provide enjoyment for a lifetime.

 Adventure Sailing

Adventure Sailing is for adventurous and experienced sailors who want to sail beyond the buoys. This program is designed to expose those junior sailors to all aspects of boat handling, navigation and seamanship. Each week includes a full day class to allow the class sufficient time to venture outside of Beverly harbor to destinations that change weekly and may include West Beach, Misery Island, and Black Beach.
Upon successful completion of this class, students will be able to sail and navigate a small boat outside of the protection of the inner-harbor and return safely.

Students will practice competitive starts and mark roundings, and will learn racing rules and tactics. Students are introduced to match, team, and fleet racing. Students will participate in local sailing regattas and will host or travel to a neighboring junior sailing program every week.
This summer-long program not only fosters independence and competition; but also encourages teamwork & cooperation, nurturing a sense of community & camaraderie in its teen-aged sailors.

 Adult Sailing

This evening class is for adults with little or no sailing experience. This course will emphasize small boat handling, seamanship, and the joys of sailing into the sunset. By quickly getting the adults on the water to learn by: hoisting sails, tying knots, navigating, experiencing the wind, waves, tides & currents, and obeying the rules-of-the-road.
Most importantly, the adult sailing program provides the opportunity to learn sailing with fellow adults—a fantastic way to unwind on the water in the summer after work and develop small boat sailing skills.
